posted 06-10-10 11:11 PM CT (US) Self Explanatory ... But basically, how can you play Age of Empires II without having to put the CD in all the time? Its technically not illegal to burn the entire CD on your hardrive, if you own the game, but are there any other easier methods to do this? Thanks to anyone who responds!

You can just take it out after the game has started. I fear everything else is illegal... this was what I liked about Diablo 2: one day, Blizzard Entertainment released a patch that also contains a no-CD patch. Unfortunately for you though, Ensemble Studios didn't get that fantastic idea for The Conquerors (yet, and probably they won't ever).

Age of Empires II: The Conquerors - User Patch v.1.5. The file User Patch v.1.5 is a modification. This update will not enable no-cd gameplay.

Hm, if I`m right (and Evgeny said that, too), original collectors edition of AoC comes with a no-cd exe file, so it`s not illegal. For more info, you may even check this topic.

Just to illustrate:
Moderation announcement on VEG. He got banned for admitting to have hacked exe-files. Evgeny is obviously a smurf of VEG.

The main point I was referring to is that on official collectors edition of AoC there`s a no-cd exe

But to me it still seems illegal if you're using an exe file that didn't ship with your copy of Age of Empires.
(I admit that it is a bit weird.)

I have brought 4 copies of age of empires over the years, i have a current working copy. i choose to use a no cd patch. in no way am i breaking any law. my ownership of the software entitles me to use it. further more voobly re-writes the .exe file on the fly - if it were an issue for microsoft dont you think they would have gone after voobly/igz in the 3 years its been going?

I'm not saying it's an issue for Microsoft. It's just that the Heavengames policy on illegal warez prohibits the discussion of it.

i dont want to get in this discussion but just buy the latest Collectors' Edition.
NOTE-IT SHALL BE ORIGINAL.
So,you get an advantage in collectors edition that you dont need to insert a CD to play(Only if you select full install)
And its an official version too so nobody can say that you downloaded a no-cd patch.And it doesn'y cost mush.Maybe 10$.

Try searching for a program called Alcohol 120%(or Alcohol 52%), from what I here it enables you to use software without the CD. I don't have it but a friend of mine has it. I don't think it's illegal because I think you have to install it first to use it.
In no way am I pushing Illegal use of pc games as that's not me. Just a suggestion, and make sure that you have a legal copy of the game.

What Alcohol 52% does is allow you to mount .iso copies of a disc you have. So you'd have to copy the entire disc onto your harddrive, but that's legal to back up your data if you own it.

I wanna ask the mods that is it wrong to backup our game onto a cd/harddrive/portable HDD as long as we have the original copy to back it up from?

There is nothing wrong with backing up your game files if you own a legit copy of the game. However, it is when you intend to distribute those files that it becomes a piracy issue, and thus against our Code of Conduct.
